About Flatten PDF
Flatten PDF turns interactive form fields into ordinary page content. After flattening, the values you typed into a form look the same, but nobody can click into the fields and change them.
You need this before you send a filled-in application, tax form or contract template. An unflattened form lets the recipient edit your answers, and some viewers show empty fields if they handle forms differently. Flattening also fixes forms that print blank or show values only on hover.
The Whole page option goes further and converts each page into an image, which removes every layer, comment and hidden element.
How to use Flatten PDF
- Open the filled-in PDF form.
- Choose Form fields to lock values in place with text that stays selectable.
- Choose Whole page if you need everything merged into a single image layer.
- Click Flatten PDF and download the result.
Locks your answers
Form values become part of the page. Recipients can read them but not change them.
Prints reliably
Flattened forms print the same on every printer and in every viewer.
Two strengths
Flatten only forms, or flatten everything into images for maximum compatibility.
Private
Forms often contain personal data. This tool keeps them on your device.
What flattening changes inside the file
An interactive PDF form contains two layers. The page itself holds the printed labels and lines. On top, a set of widgets holds the fields: text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons and dropdowns, each with a stored value and instructions for how to draw it.
Flattening draws each field's current appearance onto the page and then deletes the widgets. The text you typed becomes ordinary text in the page content, checkboxes become drawn ticks, and the form structure disappears. The file now behaves like any other document.
Whole page flattening renders the full page, including comments, stamps and form fields, into a single picture at 200 DPI. Use it when a recipient's system rejects layered PDFs, when you need to remove hidden content with certainty, or when annotations from a review should become permanent. The trade-off: text in the result is no longer selectable and the file may grow.
Flattening can't be undone in the flattened copy. Keep the original form file if you might need to edit the answers later.
Tips for better results
- Fill the form completely before you flatten. Empty fields stay empty forever in the flattened copy.
- Flatten before you merge a form into a larger document, so the values survive the merge.
- Sign with Sign PDF and then flatten to keep the signature from being moved.
- If the tool reports no form fields, your PDF only looks like a form. It has nothing to flatten.
Questions and answers
Can I edit a PDF after flattening?
Not the form fields. They become part of the page. Keep your original file if you need to change answers.
Does flattening keep text selectable?
Yes, with the Form fields option. The Whole page option converts pages to images.
Why does my form print blank?
Some forms store values that only appear when a viewer renders the widgets. Flattening draws the values onto the page, which fixes printing.
Does flattening remove comments?
Form fields mode leaves comments in place. Whole page mode bakes them into the image.
Is my form uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
