About Edit PDF Metadata

Before
After

Edit PDF Metadata shows the document properties stored inside a PDF and lets you change them. Update the title, author, subject, keywords, creating application, producer and creation date, then save a new copy.

Metadata matters more than most people think. Browsers show the PDF title in the tab instead of the file name. Search engines use the title and subject when they index PDFs on websites. Document management systems sort by author. And a CV that says "Author: old-employer-laptop" or a report titled "Copy of Draft v7 FINAL" makes a poor impression.

You can also clear fields to remove details you don't want to share.

How to use Edit PDF Metadata

  1. Open the PDF. The current metadata appears in the form.
  2. Edit any field. Separate keywords with commas.
  3. Clear a field to remove it, or use Clear all fields.
  4. Click Save metadata and download the updated PDF.

Where PDF metadata shows up

PDF readers show metadata in the document properties dialog (Ctrl+D in Adobe Acrobat and many others). Chrome, Edge and Firefox display the Title field as the tab name when you open a PDF online, which makes a descriptive title worth setting for any PDF you publish.

Google and other search engines read the title of PDFs they crawl and often use it as the headline in search results. A file without a title gets a headline guessed from its first line or its file name. Subject and keywords play a smaller role but help internal search tools such as SharePoint and Google Drive.

Creator and producer record the software that made the file, for example "Microsoft Word for Microsoft 365" and "macOS Quartz PDFContext". They can reveal your software and operating system. The author field often contains the name from the computer's user account, which might be a former employer, a colleague or a nickname.

This tool edits the classic document information fields. Some PDFs also contain an XMP metadata stream with a copy of the same data in XML. To strip that too, use Sanitize PDF, which removes both.

Tips for better results

  • Write titles the way you would write a page headline: specific and readable, such as "2026 Annual Report, Green Valley School".
  • Put your name or organization in Author before publishing reports.
  • Check the Author field of any document you received from someone else before you forward it.
  • Use Sanitize PDF if your goal is privacy rather than better labels.
