About PDF to Word

Before
After

PDF to Word turns a PDF into a .docx file you can edit in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages. The tool extracts the text, detects headings from font sizes, rebuilds paragraphs and bullet lists, and writes a clean Word document.

Use it when you need to update an old report that only exists as PDF, reuse text from a brochure, edit a CV you saved as PDF years ago, or translate a document in Word.

The output focuses on clean, editable text. Expect a tidy document with a proper heading structure, not a pixel-perfect copy of the PDF's layout.

How to use PDF to Word

  1. Open the PDF you want to convert.
  2. Keep Keep page breaks on if you want each PDF page to start a new page in Word.
  3. Click Convert to Word.
  4. Download the .docx file and open it in your word processor.

Real headings

Large and bold text becomes Heading 1, 2 or 3, so Word's navigation pane works.

Clean paragraphs

Lines get joined into paragraphs you can edit without fixing line breaks.

Bullet lists

Lines that start with bullets turn into Word lists.

No sign-up

No email, no account, no queue. The file converts on your device.

What converts well and what doesn't

PDFs exported from Word, Google Docs or similar tools convert best. They contain real text in reading order, and the font sizes map onto heading levels. Reports, articles, letters, CVs and manuals usually come out ready to edit.

The tool decides heading levels by comparing each line's font size with the most common size in the document, which it treats as body text. Text 60 percent larger becomes Heading 1, 30 percent larger becomes Heading 2, and slightly larger or bold short lines become Heading 3.

Complex layouts lose their structure. Multi-column magazines, tables, text boxes placed at fixed positions and text wrapped around pictures all come out as plain paragraphs. Images don't get transferred. For those documents, the converted text still saves you from retyping, but plan time to rebuild the layout.

Scanned PDFs contain no text, only pictures of pages. The converter tells you when it finds no text. You need OCR software to read scans.

Tips for better results

  • Open the result in Word and use the Navigation pane to check the heading structure.
  • Apply your own styles in Word after converting. Headings use Word's built-in styles, so a theme change updates them all.
  • For plain text without any structure, PDF to Text is faster.
  • If you only need part of a document, extract those pages first with Extract PDF Pages.

Questions and answers

Will the Word file look like the PDF?

No. The converter prioritizes editable text with headings and paragraphs. Columns, tables and images don't carry over.

Can it convert scanned PDFs?

No. Scans contain images of text. You need OCR software first.

Which programs open the result?

Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages and any other editor that reads .docx.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens in your browser.

Is there a page limit?

No. Long documents take a little longer to process.
