What this tool can and can't do
Unlocking needs the correct password. The tool decrypts the file with the key your password produces, copies all pages into a new document, and saves it without encryption. If the password is wrong, decryption fails and nothing happens.
The tool doesn't guess or crack passwords. Breaking an encrypted PDF without its password takes specialized software and, for strong passwords, more computing time than anyone has. If you lost the password to your own file, check your email for the message that delivered the password, or ask the sender for a new copy.
Restriction-only PDFs work differently. They have an owner password that controls permissions but an empty open password. Every reader can open them, and the restrictions rely on the reader's cooperation. This tool opens them with the empty password and saves a copy without the restrictions.
Unlocked files lose their protection. Store them somewhere safe, and remove the copy once you no longer need it. Consider protecting the file again with your own password using Protect PDF.
Tips for better results
- Check the email that delivered the statement. Banks usually explain the password format, such as your birth date as DDMMYYYY.
- Passwords are case-sensitive. Check Caps Lock if a password you know gets rejected.
- Unlock, edit, then protect again if you need to modify a confidential file.
- Only unlock files you own or have permission to change.
