About Markdown to PDF

Before
After

Write or open a Markdown file and watch the formatted preview render beside it, then export a real text PDF, selectable, searchable and properly paginated.

GitHub-flavored Markdown works throughout: tables, task lists, code blocks, quotes. Fenced blocks marked mermaid become real diagrams, rendered in the preview and embedded as crisp images in the PDF.

Everything happens in your browser. The editor never uploads your text, and the typesetter runs locally with the standard fonts every PDF viewer has.

How to use Markdown to PDF

  1. Write or open your Markdown file.
  2. Check the live preview; insert tables or Mermaid diagrams from the toolbar.
  3. Pick page size, font size and margin.
  4. Press the convert button and download your PDF.

Live preview

The formatted result renders as you type, including Mermaid diagrams.

Mermaid diagrams

Flowcharts and sequence diagrams written as short text become embedded images in the PDF.

Real text, not screenshots

Headings stay headings, text stays selectable and searchable, links stay clickable.

Supported Markdown syntax

Headings use one to six hash signs at the start of a line. Level one and two headings get a thin rule underneath. Paragraphs are separated by an empty line. Wrap text in double asterisks for bold and single asterisks or underscores for italic. Backticks mark inline code, which prints in a monospaced font on a light gray background.

Lists start with a dash, an asterisk or a number followed by a period. Indent by two spaces to nest a list. Task list items such as - [x] Done print with a checkbox marker. Block quotes start with a greater-than sign and print in gray italics with a bar on the left.

Fenced code blocks start and end with three backticks. Tables use pipes and a separator row of dashes, as on GitHub. Horizontal rules use three dashes on their own line. Links print in blue with an underline; images appear as their alt text in brackets, because the browser can't fetch remote images into the PDF.

The PDF uses the standard Helvetica and Courier fonts, which every PDF reader has built in. These fonts cover Western European languages, including accented letters. Characters outside that set, such as emoji, Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic, print as question marks.

Tips for better results

  • Leave an empty line before and after lists and tables, or they may merge with the paragraph above.
  • Use a level 1 heading at the top. The tool also uses it as the PDF's title.
  • Need page numbers? Run the PDF through Add Page Numbers afterwards.
  • Pick a 10 or 10.5 point font for dense technical documents and 12 for reading on paper.

Questions and answers

Can I include images?

Not yet. Images print as their alt text. Use JPG to PDF and Merge PDF to add picture pages.

Why do some characters appear as question marks?

The built-in fonts cover Latin-based alphabets only. Emoji and non-Latin scripts can't print with them.

Does it support HTML inside Markdown?

No. Raw HTML gets skipped.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The PDF gets built in your browser.

Can I change the font?

You can change the size. The typeface stays Helvetica for text and Courier for code.

Can I include diagrams?

Yes. Add a fenced code block marked mermaid with Mermaid syntax. It renders in the preview and is embedded as an image in the PDF.
