What is Screen Color Tester?
Screen Color Tester cycles through a curated set of solid colors, gradients, and patterns so you can evaluate your monitor's color accuracy, contrast ratio, backlight uniformity, and freedom from color banding — all without installing any software.
How to Use Screen Color Tester
- Click 'Start Test' to go fullscreen — this removes all browser chrome so you inspect the full display area.
- In fullscreen, press any key (or click) to jump to the next panel, and the left arrow key to go back.
- Press Esc at any time to leave fullscreen and return to the page.
- Outside fullscreen, use 'Next'/'Previous' or the left/right arrow keys to move through the panels.
- Enable 'Auto-cycle' to advance through panels every 3 seconds automatically.
- On each panel, look for discoloration, banding, or uneven brightness across the surface.
- Test in a dim room for the most accurate assessment.
Examples
Backlight bleed check
Input: Pure Black panel, dark room
Output: Light leaking from screen edges indicates backlight bleed
Color banding check
Input: Red→Green gradient panel
Output: Smooth blend = good display; visible color steps = color banding or low bit-depth
Uniformity check
Input: 50% Gray panel, observe entire screen
Output: Patches of lighter or darker gray reveal backlight non-uniformity
Common Mistakes
- Testing with OS color filters active (Night Light, True Tone, f.lux) — always disable these before a color accuracy test.
- Judging color accuracy without calibration — for professional work, use a hardware colorimeter in addition to visual testing.
- Only testing a few panels — different faults show up on different patterns; run through the full set for a thorough check.
