What is Word Counter?
A word counter is a tool that measures the length and structure of a piece of text by counting its words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs. It also estimates reading time and speaking time, which helps writers hit a target length for essays, blog posts, scripts, and social media posts that enforce strict limits. Most word counters split text on whitespace to identify words, count sentence-ending punctuation to identify sentences, and treat double line breaks as paragraph boundaries. The character count can be reported either including or excluding spaces, since some platforms cap total characters and others cap only non-whitespace characters. Because the counting runs in the browser, a word counter is safe to use on drafts you do not want to upload to a cloud service.

Common Mistakes
- Using character count instead of word count for platforms (like Twitter/X) that actually limit by character, or vice versa — always check which limit applies.
- Assuming reading time estimates apply uniformly regardless of content difficulty — technical or dense text takes longer to read than the 200 wpm average assumes.
- Not accounting for the fact that pasted text from Word or Google Docs may include invisible formatting characters that inflate the character count.
